Cheryl Skinner

Pastor - Cheryl A. Skinner

Zach Erwin

Christian Educator - Zach Erwin

Cheryl A. Skinner, assumed her duties, July 1, 2014.  She comes to Mount Olivet from Advance United Methodist Church, where she has been the pastor since 2008.

Cheryl’s husband, Kirk Tutterow, is the  pastor at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kannapolis, NC.  Cheryl will be residing with her husband and her step-daughter, Ellen, in the Trinity parsonage in Kannapolis.

Cheryl is a 1988 graduate of the University of Maine with a BA degree and she received her MDIV from Duke University in 2002.  Her first appointment in the Western NC Annual Conference was Abo: First Minister of Youth and Children, 2003.  In 2005, she was appointed Minister of Children and Families at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem and served there until her appointment to Advance in 2008.

Cheryl’s approach to the role of pastor can best be summed up, by the following quotes from her.  “I served as an associate minister in a large church setting, doing children’s and youth ministries, Christian education, and family ministries for six years before beginning my current appointment as a “solo” pastor.  I prefer the role I have now, as it gives me much more flexibility and variety in what I do.  It allows me to work on the bigger picture of the church, and it gets me out and about with more of the congregation and community.”  Or to put it another way, “I crave a church that is ready to move!”

Choir Director - Dr. Alissa Deeter

Dana Jarrett

Organist/Bell Choir Director - Dana R. Jarrett

Dr. Alissa Deeter is an Associate Professor of ap-plied voice and voice pedagogy at UNC Charlotte. Alissa has a long history of leading music in various churches along with her professional teaching employment. While doing her doctoral studies she was the music director at First Presbyterian in Monticello, Florida in the mid to late 1990s. She took a teaching position at San Francisco State University from 2001 - 2010 teaching voice and also worked as the choir director at Ocean Avenue Presbyterian Church. While at Ocean Avenue she worked with the minister and church to plan music appropriate to the scripture and theme of the services. She was also instrumental in planning and organizing praise concerts and fundraisers for specific causes such as Philippine Hurricane Relief and the San Francisco Safe House. Since coming to North Carolina, Alissa has served as director of music at Lakeside Fellowship Church in Mooresville.
Dr. Deeter comes to us having grown up in the United Methodist church and is glad to be getting back to her roots. With her musical training, Methodist roots and her experience in the Presbyterian churches, she offers Mount Olivet a nice blend of a wide variety of music to enrich and enhance our worship.
Alissa has a heart for God and a strong desire to make her talent and training available for God’s service. Mount Olivet is a great place for her to share her talent and heart so that we all may grow in our faith in God; as well as in our service both locally and around the world.
Alissa is also an excellent pianist and singer. She is married to Scott Deeter who works in web design/development and code writing. But his passion is being a jazz musician. They have three daughters; Ella- age 8, Evie- age 4 and Gwynnie- age 2.

Dana has served as organist of Mount Olivet Methodist Church since October, 2004. Prior to accepting the position with Mount Olivet, he served as organist for the Calvary Baptist Church in Kannapolis for 30+ years. Music became a part of his life at the age of 11 when his parents purchased a used upright piano for their home and signed him up for piano lessons with Mr. Ed Fink. After 3 successful years with Ed, Dana turned to Ms. Eunie Trull for organ lessons for the next 2 years, however during the 1st year he became a church organist at the age of 15.
Throughout the years, it has been his privilege to assist adult choirs, children choirs, bell choirs, quartets, trios, and soloists in addition to over 200 weddings, numerous revivals, and opportunities with community organizations and churches. Dana presently serves as pianist for the Piedmont Singing Men, a position begun in 2004. Recently, opportunities fell in his path to record a CD. Dana – Plain & Simple is a project of gospel and religious arrangements presented with a touch of traditional and contemporary flair. Plans are in the works for a 2nd CD - Christmas on the Keys featuring popular Christmas arrangements with keyboard sound variations to enhance the holiday spirit. Dana can be reached at jarrettdr@yahoo.com for comments and bookings for musical assistance.
Although music plays an important role in Dana’s life, the most important people to him are his family. Dana has been married since 1980 to Kelly and they are proud parents of two children: Brenton and wife Torrie; Shanna and husband Travis. Presently they are proud grandparents of two grandchildren, Reese and Bentley. As a family, they enjoy camping trips and taking care of their extended family of dogs. Dana’s “daytime” job is serving as principal of Davidson Elementary School in the Charlotte / Mecklenburg school system. Dana states, “In all aspects of my life, people play significant roles and I find importance in seeing people succeed, be it musically, educationally, or as a family.”
